Local runners are preparing for the inaugural A1A Marathon and Half Marathon
-- Greater Fort Lauderdale's first major marathon -- beginning at 6:30 a.m.
Feb. 19 at the 17th Street Causeway by the Broward County Convention Center.
To celebrate Presidents' Day Weekend, each runner will start the race waving
an American flag, handed out by Uncle Sam on stilts.
Broward County features some interesting flag-waving participants. Clarence
Klugler, 60, competed in a marathon in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was serving in
the Army.
Frank Gay, 60, is running his 100th marathon. He will wear bib No. 100.
Brian Scott, 37, attempts his first marathon after some 5Ks and corporate
runs. He works for Broward County's environmental division and looks forward
to a beautiful run along Broward County beaches.
Frank Kerker, 47, runs his fourth marathon, using the training to stay in
shape. Former Cincinnati Bengals football coach David Shula, a son of former
Dolphins coach Don Shula, is registered.
Jim Stork, a marathon runner and owner of Stork's Cafe & Bakery in Wilton
Manors and Las Olas Boulevard, is sponsoring mile-marker No. 20, where
volunteers wearing chef hats will be distributing mini pastries to runners.
Miami-Dade is also well represented. Entering his 22nd marathon, Josh
Liebman, 31, will be running five marathons in six weeks with the A1A
Marathon being the third.
Guillermo Hisas registered for his fifth marathon. He sets his mind to
something and achieves his goal. George Hernandez, 38, also participates in
marathons to maintain good health.
As part of the event, Nova Southeastern University's Health and Fitness Expo
is free from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Broward County Convention
Center. Guest speakers include two-time Olympian Ronnie Holassie.
Presented by Wachovia, the A1A Marathon (26.2 miles) is a USA Track & Field
certified course -- a flat course -- that will qualify men and women of
various age groups for the Boston Marathon.
More than 2,000 athletes from throughout South Florida, more than 40 states
and 12 foreign countries are preparing for this competition, produced by
Exclusive Sports Marketing of Boca Raton.
Athletes and volunteers can register by 7 p.m
